Wilhelmina Magic
Coming into Wilhelmina Bay today. It’s feeding time for Humpback Whales and it is at its height. What a spectacle. We are here late in the afternoon and the sun is catching the spray from the whale blows. They are all around us. We find oursleves in the middle of a bubble net fishing ring. It’s when the whales swim in a circle, blowing out air under water that creates a curtain of bubbles to corral the krill that they feed on. Then they dive below the curtain and rise again through the center, capturing schools of krill. It’s an amazing site. But being in the center of this activity, we almost lost all our gear in a near capsize. It was thrilling to be so close to such natural life. We were the lesser creatures today, privileged to witness magic.
